The help desk will need to review the SQL Server log of the installation in order to confirm the exact reason of a failed SQL Server installation. These logs are located by default at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.CAREWare\MSSQL\Log . Please zip all logs together and email to the
CAREWare Help Desk.
Normally this issue is caused by an inability of the SQL Server installation to assign the current Windows user permission to install the required service. Manual installation of SQL Server 2005 or 2008 is then required in order to do so. The following procedure will walk you through this process.
- Download the full CAREWare setup file from the HRSA CAREWare website for your PC's architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).
- Extract the setup files, but do not run the installation when prompted.
- Go to C:\CW_Setup and run SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe or (insert 64 exe name). (If prompted to allow application to Continue click Yes.)
- Click on "Installation" in the upper left corner.
- Click on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation".
- Verify all Setup Support Rules have passed before clicking on "OK". If any warning or failures occurred, then resolve before proceeding.
- Click "Install".
- Verify all Setup Support Rules have passed before clicking on "Next". If any warning or failures occurred, then resolve before proceeding.
- Check the button for "Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2008" then click "Next".
- Click "Next" on the Product Key screen then check the "I Agree" check box before clicking on the "Next" button again.
- Check the check boxes for Database Engine Services and SQL Server Replication then click "Next".
- Set the Named instance to "CAREWare" then verify the Instance root directory is set to your desired location.
Note:This is best time to specify another hard drive. Click "Next". - Verify the proposed Disk Space Requirements are available then click "Next".
- Using the pull down menu for Account Name, set the SQL Server Database Engine to NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE and then using the pull down menu for Startup Type set the field to "Automatic". The Collation tab will be left to default.
Note: This step resolves the Windows user issue described above. - On the Database Engine Configuration screen set the Authentication Mode to "Mixed Mod"e. Provide a unique 9+ character password containing upper & lower case characters, 2 numbers, & 2 alphanumeric symbols. Add the proper SQL Server administrators using the "Add..." or "Add Current User" buttons. All stand-alone installations of SQL Server can simply use the "Add Current User" button). Click on the "Data Directories" tab. Verify all locations are correct then click "Next".
Note: This is a perfect time to separate data and log files to separate hard drives or directories if desired. - Leave the Error and Usage Reporting default then click "Next".
- Verify all Installation Rules have passed before clicking on "OK". If any warning or failures occurred, then resolve before proceeding.
- Verify all configuration options have been set as correctly before clicking on "Install". Note: The installation may take 20-30 minutes to complete on older hardware. Do not click on "Cancel" or close any windows related to the installation or it will fail.
- Verify all features were installed successfully on the Installation Progress screen before clicking "Next". If any warning or failures occurred, then resolve before proceeding.
- A copy of the Summary Log can be saved before clicking "Close".
- Click on the red X in the upper right corner of the screen to close the SQL Server Installation.
Once the installation of SQL Server has completed successfully the CAREWare Data Tier setup file will need to be run in order to complete the instance configuration for CAREWare.
- Go to C:\CW_Setup and run DatabaseInstaller.exe. (If prompted to allow application to Continue click Yes.)
- Leave the installation type as Domestic if installing in the United States or one of its territories. Otherwise check International for all other locations. Click "Next".
- Leave the check box checked for "Check here if you already have an instance of SQL Express..." and highlight the SQL Server Instance named "CAREWare" in the detected SQL Server instances box. Click "Next".
- Provide the SA password then click "Next".
- Allow the installation of the CAREWare tables, fields, user, and role to complete successfully. Once completed click "Finish". When prompted to overwrite the existing businessTierSettings.XML file, then click "Yes". If prompted to install Management Studio 2008, then click "No".
Once the above steps have completed successfully you will be able to login to CAREWare using the
default user name and password. The restoration of backups files can now occur either
within CAREWare or by
using Management Studio.
