This error message has two resolutions. In order to resolve this error you will need to go to the business tier directory and open the CW Admin utility.
The business tier directory is located by default at C:\Program Files\CAREWare\RW CAREWare Business Tier
- Click on the “Services” tab and verify that the SQL Server instance is started and running.
- If it is not, then highlight the instance (default name is MSSQL$CAREWare) and then click “Start Service”.

To find the computer hostname:
# Go to Start>Run
# Type CMD then press enter. This will bring up the command line.
# From the command line type HOSTNAME and then press enter. The name displayed is the hostname for the computer you are currently using.
To find the SQL Server instance name:
# Open the CW Admin.exe
# Go to the Services tab and view the MSSQL$XXXXX (where X is the name) service.
By default this should display as MSSQL$CAREWare.
