By default CAREWare uses port 8124 in order to enable communication between the business and client tiers. This port will need to be opened in order for CAREWare to work properly. The port number used by the two separate tiers can be changed in order to work through firewalls in place on a network. Each tier will need to have the port changed in order to match the other. The following steps will walk you through where to make these changes.

On the Business Tier

  1. Go to the business tier directory (Default location: C:\Program Files\CAREWare\RW CAREWare Business Tier\)
  2. Locate and double click on the CW Admin.exe
  3. Press Stop Server
  4. Highlight the Port tag in the large white window and press Edit
  5. Change the port number from 8124 to the port to be used and press Save
  6. Click on the Table Name pull down and select LocalNumberStorage
  7. Highlight the tag CAREWarePort and press Edit
  8. Change the port number from 8124 to the port to be used and press Save
  9. Press Start Server

On the Client Tier
  1. Open CAREWare
  2. Click on 'Options'
  3. Click on 'Server List'
  4. Click on 'Add'
  5. Add the server hostname or IP address and the port to be used and press Save
  6. Click on 'Close'
  7. Using the Server List pull down menu, choose the newly added server
  8. Login to CAREWare using your user name and password
